Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speaker. Feminist Frequency provides videos, commentary and analyses of the way in which popular culture portrays women. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency, a website to educate women about their roles in pop culture narratives, is her brainchild. Additionally, she serves as the executive director. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is the main goals of her work. However, Sarkeesian also explores the issue of specifically targeted harassment online against women as well as other communities that are excluded. With a master's in the field of political and social thinking at York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after presenter and has presented speech at the TEDxWomen Festival as well as at The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She has been interested in the gender issue and feminist movements since a early age. When she graduated in 2009, still studying at university she launched her Feminist Frequency site. The ebullient young woman was targeted by the Internet for starting a web series on gender in videogames. The attack did not stop her, but instead strengthened her resolve as an activist for women in media. Many awards have been presented to her as a way of acknowledging all the contributions that she made. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winner for her work as a media critic. She was also the founder and director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organisation that studies pop culture representations of females.
